A 34 year old man was shot and killed at Tuen Mun Town Plaza on 15 January 2026 after he was wielding a large knife and threatening a woman at the shopping center. The man reportedly took the knife from a Don Don Donki kitchen area and moved aggressively through the plaza.
The police officers first tried non-lethal methods to calm the situation but were forced to escalate to firearms when the man continued to pose a threat to the hostage's life.
Police fired two shots, one to the chest and other in the shoulder. The suspect was rushed to the hospital where he was pronounced dead.
The woman taken hostage was rescued with minor injuries.
The 34 year old man was identified as Vietnamese with a Hong Kong identification card. Other news reports stated that the man had a criminal record and he was possibly involved in drugs. Local media reported that the suspect’s mother and family members visited the mortuary, grieving and questioning why police used lethal force instead of disabling shots.
Hong Kong police are continuing to investigate the incident, collecting statements, reviewing body-cam/CCTV footage, and assessing the sequence of confrontation and response. A police press release confirms the case is under official review.
