On 6 January 2026, the foreign ministers of the Nordic countries including Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway and Sweden issued a joint statement for the ongoing geopolitical issue with Greenland’s sovereignty and security.
The statement reaffirms that the matters concerning Greenland and its sovereignty and security should be decided by its people.
The statement is a response to recent comments of US President Donal Trump and his administration. The Nordic countries stated that they are committed to preserving security, stability and cooperation in the Arctic region.
The US Administration remarks including the idea to buy or acquire Greenland alarmed the Nordic and European allies.
Denmark’s Prime Minister stated that any forceful action against Greenland could jeopardize NATO unity. Several NATO countries also reinforced that Greenland “belongs to its people” and its future should not be decided by external force or external pressure.
